Our Mandate
State law requires that we base the salaries of the elected officials on realistic standards in order to pay them according to the duties of their office and to attract citizens of the highest quality to public service.
In setting the elected officials' salaries, we:
- Make salary adjustments to individual positions, a position category (such as the judiciary) for equity or alignment purposes or to recognize additional duties or responsibilities.
- Grant a general wage adjustment (GWA) or make flat dollar adjustments to individual positions, a group or groups of positions, or to all positions.
- Make no change -- retain current salary levels.
The Constitution expressly forbids us from decreasing the salaries of the state's elected officials during their current term of office.
We have no authority or jurisdiction over any benefits the elected officials receive.
